Number of Students in a Class
听
The number of students per class differs depending on the type of course. This is meant to ensure the effective use of the University鈥檚 classroom space, while at the same time not adversely affecting the quality of instruction. As a general rule, class sizes are determined by departments:
- 18-24 students for general education and required courses within programs;
- 12-15 students for language courses.
Departments and the administration shall show flexibility in cases of required courses that fall below or exceed these limits.听 The number of students auditing a course is not taken into account when calculating the number of students in that course. Exceptions to the minimum course sizes may be made when a given course is required of upper-class students to complete their major. The number of students in Sports classes is variable depending on the capacity of the facilities and the nature of the Sport.
Courses may be cancelled due to an insufficient number of registered students:
- courses with fewer than half enrollment (maximum class size is determined by the department) will remain open for the Add/Drop period;
- courses with fewer than 5 students will be cancelled on the fourth day of the Add/Drop period.
